The Rent Control Department is pleading with the Finance Ministry to as a matter of urgency release the funds allocated to them to enable the department to pay their outstanding rent.
The Department is facing possible ejection from its premises at Kasoa due to the non-payment of rent for the past nine months.
The unit is a subsidiary of the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housings and it is tasked to among other things; ensure harmony between landlords and tenants.
The government has, however, slashed 90% of the initial budgetary allocation approved for the department.
Speaking to
Citi News, the National Director of the Department, Addo Soin Dombo, stated that "we have been renting this premises for the past 14 years and it has been very difficult for us to pay our rent because government does not release funds to us early enough and the amount is nothing to write home about."
He added that the department has so far been able to raise an amount of GHC 400.00 to temporarily settle the landlord.
According to Mr.
Dombo, they are facing similar rent problems in Wa in the Upper Wet Region.
He said “we had to open an office in Wa because there are a lot of rent problems up there; yet, we can’t settle the two years advance the landlord is asking for.
Honorable Alban Bagbin had to intervene on our behalf because he happens to come from there.”
