Hon. Haruna Iddrisu - Minister of Communication
The Communication Minister and NDC MP for Tamale Central, Haruna Iddrisu is calling on the minority side in Parliament to concentrate their efforts on winning the votes of electorates in the newly created Constituencies and stop crying wolf.
Elements within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have expressed fear that government is attempting to gerrymander with the creation of the additional 45 Constituencies.
Some members of the party have already taken the issue to court leading to heated debates on the floor of Parliament over the newly introduced Constitutional Instrument.
The Chairman of the NPP, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey has also called on the Electoral Commission to exercise restraint with the creation of the new constituencies.
In an interview with Citi News
he pointed out that “this is not something to rush into, especially with only a few months to the election and then you are rushing it through.”
According to the Party Chairman, there are a lot of anomalies surrounding the creation of the new constituencies that the Electoral Commission needs to look into.
In his opinion, the Commission was failing to consider the position of the courts and Parliament on the matter.
Speaking to Citi News, however, Hon.
Iddrisu urged the NPP to welcome the decision of the Electoral Commission and begin moves to capture those new seats instead of making allegations.
According to him, “the mandate for the creation of districts lies within the executive authority of the President.
And that of constituencies lies with the Electoral commission.
"Besides, the Ghanaian Electorates are sensitive enough to know which party to vote for whether you gerrymander or not.”
Below is a list of the new constituencies which are to be created.
