A suspected armed robber has died after engaging in a shootout with the Ashanti Regional Police Highway Patrol on Friday.
According to Citi News’
Ashanti regional correspondent Hawa Iddrisu, the incident happened around 5:30am at a village near the Atwima Nwabiagya district of the Ashanti region.
The deceased and his accomplice, who is now at large, approached the police checkpoint at Twapease, an area noted for highway robberies, in a Toyota Corolla taxi cab with registration number AS 78710.
At a media briefing, the police said the highway patrol team signaled the taxi driver to stop but he refused, arousing police suspicion.
“As the robbers were being pursued, they turned toward Mankoaso Township at top speed. Realizing that the patrol team was closing in on them, they opened fire. This compelled the police to return fire killing one. The others however managed to escape,” she added.
