Vice President Amissah-Arthur
The Vice President of Ghana, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, has declared the collapse of the Melcom shopping complex as a national disaster.
He made this known when he visited the scene of the tragedy in Achimota, a suburb of Accra. Six people have been rescued with several others feared dead or trapped under the rubble.
Mr. Amissah-Arthur appealed to the onlookers to move further away from the site to enable rescuers to effectively carry out their duties.
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Hannah Tetteh, the Mayor of Accra, Dr. Alfred Vanderpuye are also present at the scene.
President John Mahama has however ordered the Interior Minister, William Kwesi Aboah, the Vice President, Mr. Amissah-Arthur to coordinate all rescue operations.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party's Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the National Chairman of the party, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey are on their way to the scene of the collapsed building.
