Clashes in Ayanfuri over mining concession
Clashes in Ayanfuri over mining concession The youth of Ayanfuri in the Upper Denkyira West District in the Central Region have clashed with the Police and some workers of Perseus Mining Limited over a mining concession.

The Youth say the concession was given to them by AngloGold Ashanti when the company was leaving the area.

But Perseus Mining maintains it legally acquired the property from AngloGold Ashanti.

An eyewitness who was at the scene of the incident reported that “the youth in the community have been working there ever since AngloGold Ashanti left the area and then Perseus Mining came to take over. But they were not employed; their farmlands were being destroyed along with their houses so they took the case to the Cape Coast High Court last month. The case is scheduled to heard on October 15.

He also mentioned that four persons were brutally assaulted and arrested by the Police on Wednesday “and they took them away. We don’t even know their whereabouts.”

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Police Commander, DCOP Andoh Kwofi, has challenged the residents of Upper Denkyira to go court and prove their case.

He said: “we went to the community yesterday to arrest some people but the youth in the area felt they were their people so unless we release their colleagues, they will vandalize our vehicle. So we made some arrests.”
DCOP Kwofi also said some Police Personnel are currently stationed in the area to prevent any further disturbances but clarified that “the incident wasn’t as chaotic as it was reported.”
