Run-away service personnel to be punished – NSS
Run-away service personnel to be punished – NSS The National Service Scheme boss, Vincent Kuagbenu, has revealed that service personnel who fail to report to their various posts will be punished.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, Mr. Kuagbenu said “this year the scheme has highlighted offences that are punishable by law under the scheme, they are evasion, absenteeism, desertion of service and self posting.”

According to the Executive Director of the NSS, these are basic principles that should guide the conducts of service personnel deployed to any organization. Service personnel cannot absent themselves from work without any permission, he said.

The National Service Scheme released the 2012 postings for national service on Wednesday. Mr. Kuagbenu also said it is compulsory for employers to demand service certificates from every employee entering their institutions.

He also decried the situation where health professionals in Ghana have never been deployed on the scheme since 1973. However, Mr. Kuagbenu said an MOU signed in May 2011 is addressing the situation at the moment.

Ghanaian students who graduate from accredited tertiary institutions are required under law to do a one year national service to the country. The NSS is the government agency mandated to formulate policies and structures for national service.
