Former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan
Former Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan has described former President John Mills as “a leader and a democrat” adding that Ghana has lost a great and dear son.
Mr.
Annan said this when he paid a visit to the Castle to pay his respect and to congratulate President John Mahama.
He also pledged his “personal support” to President Mahama adding that “I’m sure you’re going to lead us as effectively as a any leader could.”
Speaking at the castle earlier today Mr.
Annan said “our country has gone through a difficult period, we’ve lost a leader and a democrat, now you have the baton and I’m here to pay my respect and congratulate you in this difficult time as you take on a very difficult challenge for our nation.
“I’m sure you’re going to lead us as effectively as any leader could and let me assure you of my personal support and I’m sure that Ghanaians would stand behind you and work with you as you steer the affairs of state so ones again congratulations Mr.
President.”
On his part President Mahama said he appreciated Mr.
Annan’s decision to pay homage to the late president and added that “I know you and president Mills were quite close and at several times of challenges he relied on your good counsel and you have always freely given that.
“I count that I would be able to continue that relationship and that I would be able to freely draw on your wide international experience to the benefit of our dear country.”
