Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan may reconsider his position to abstain from taking penalty kicks for the national team, according to the Graphic Sports.
Gyan was vilified after missing two important penalties in a world cup quarter final against Uruguay and a semifinal game in the AFCON against Zambia.
The striker subsequently swore not to ever take penalties when he is playing for Ghana.
However Gyan has told the Graphic Sports that he might have a rethink.
“There is no problem with me taking penalty kicks. However, it must be acknowledged also that the decision was not taken in a vacuum. With what I have experienced in the past, I don’t need to rush back. As a striker and captain of the team, I will do all I can to help the team succeed so, whatever decision I take with regards to this particular issue will be in the interest of the national team and not a personal one.”
Gyan’s family was threatened after he missed the penalty that could have sent Ghana and Africa to their first ever semifinal place at the world cup.
Reports even say the striker promised his late mother he would not take penalties anymore.
However since the Black Stars lost on penalties in the final of the AFCON in Equatorial Guinea, the Ghana Football Association is said to have made attempts to get the striker to soften his stance.
The Chairman of the Black Stars management committee George Afriyie, told the Graphic Sports that Gyan had been encouraged to reconsider his position on the matter.
“I believe it’s time for Gyan to reconsider his stance. With his contribution to the national team, he has nothing else to prove, but he is a senior player and has become more experienced than he was when he took the decision not to take penalty kicks,” Mr. Afriyie said.
