About 77 peer educators on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) Aids disease and sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) have undergone an intensive training at Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region.
The training was to sharpen their skills to enable them educate their peers on how to prevent unwanted pregnancies and STIs.
The trainees also included community distributors of family planning materials such as, condoms, oral pills and other contraceptives.
Mr. Stephen Nyarko-Ameyaw, the Ag. Municipal Health Director for Techiman speaking at training session advised the participants to take the training seriously.
He urged the Peer educators to disseminate the information acquired to their peers to help prevent unwanted pregnancies, the spread of HIV and STIs.
The Project Co-ordinator of the West African Programme to Combat AIDS and STIs (WAPCAS), Mr Albert Aidoo advice the youth to go for voluntary counseling and testing of HIV to know their status to enable them seek early treatment.
Mrs. Eunice Siaw, a Superintendent Health Community Nurse at the Family Planning Unit of the Techiman Polyclinic took the participants through the various methods and importance of family planning.
For his part, the Municipal Disease Control officer for Techiman, Mr Dabuo Migel said the Techiman municipality recorded 27 cases of cholera and one death. He also used the opportunity to educate the participants on the deadly Ebola Virus.
The programme was organized by the Ghana Health Service and the Techiman Municipal Assembly and supported by the United Nations Fund Population (UNFPA) under the project WAPCAS.
